OLD-Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don’t know where to do my cleanup. Do you have any suggestions?

A: If you are unsure of what road to clean, please take a look at the Richland County Roads list and the Lexington County Roads list.  You may choose any location marked “AVAILABLE.” Please note: roads that have been adopted through the Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Street, or Adopt-A-Waterway program cannot be cleaned by one-time cleanup groups.

Q: Are there any restrictions regarding where my group can clean?

A: There are restrictions.  Your safety is our greatest concern, and we do not allow groups to clean up on interstates, on/off ramps, or near overpasses.  One-time cleanup groups cannot clean highways that have already been adopted.  Please be respectful of nearby businesses during your cleanup and do not leave bagged trash on the side of the road.   This is considered illegal dumping and you could be fined by Code Enforcement Officers for doing so.  Neither SCDOT nor Keep the Midlands Beautiful will pick up trash left by one-time cleanup groups.

Q: Why doesn’t KMB take the trash to the landfill?

A: Because the cleanups are coordinated by volunteers, volunteers are also responsible for arranging trash bag removal after their cleanup is complete.  Please click here for information about Richland County Solid Waste Management or click here for information about Lexington County Solid Waste Management if you are unsure of where to take your full bags.

Q: Can I do a one-time waterway cleanup?

A: Yes.  Volunteer-chosen locations are subject to approval and one-time cleanup groups cannot clean waterways that have already been adopted.  If you do not have a specific waterway in mind, you may choose an available waterway from the Lexington County Adopt-A-Waterway list or the Richland County Adopt-A-Waterway list.

Q: What is the process for supply pickup/dropoff?

A: When you register, you will choose which supplies your group needs (most groups choose to borrow grabbers, vests, gloves, and bags). If you register online, we will email you to confirm the details of your cleanup.

We will have your supplies ready for you to pick up one day prior to your chosen cleanup date. We will leave them on the porch for you to pick up at your convenience, and you may pick them up after hours if needed.

If you have a larger group or would like to pick up your supplies earlier than one day prior to your cleanup, please let us know which day you’d like to pick up supplies in the online registration form. We are happy to accommodate you!

You will pick up your supplies from the Keep the Midlands Beautiful office. We are located at 1305 Augusta Road, West Columbia, South Carolina 29169.  Please return your supplies to our office no later than one week after your cleanup. If you have still not returned your supplies after one week, we will remind the group leader via email to bring them to the office. Please remember to return your supplies in order to avoid fees for missing materials.

Q: What is a report card?

A: Report cards help us keep track of the impact our volunteers are making each time they complete a cleanup.  They are simple and can be completed online.  Please click here for the report card form.
