Recycling Resources
Use the 5 R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle
Properly disposing of materials helps to reduce litter on our roadways and in our waterways. Look for ways to refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle.
REfuse
- Only use items you really need. For example, when you buy one item, refuse the bag. Choose an emailed or no receipt in place of a printed receipt.
REduce
- Look for ways to reduce waste. For example, print double-sided rather than single-sided.
REuse
- Reuse materials when possible. For example, use plastic bags to line your trash cans. Replace single-use items such as batteries and plastic silverware with reusable versions. Use cloth bags to carry your groceries. Bring your gently used shoes, all styles and sizes, to our office year-round to be sent to developing countries during our annual spring Shoe Drive.
REpurpose
- Find creative ways to repurpose or upcycle items. For example, turn an old tire into a colorful planter for flowers, cut up used paper for scrap paper, or convert an old pallet into an outdoor garden center or bar.
REcycle
- Recycle more but recycle right! Recycling rules vary by county and by municipality. Please use the following links to find out how to recycle in your area or download their app.
Electronics Must Be Recycled
South Carolina state law (S.C. Code of Law, 48-60-05 et seq.) bans computers, computer monitors, printers, and televisions from being placed in the garbage and solid waste landfills. Please reuse or recycle these and other electronics responsibly.
Recycling Drop-off Locations and Events
Lexington and Richland Counties have regular drop-off locations and special drop-off events for recycling electronics, hazardous waste and other materials that are difficult to dispose of. Visit our Upcoming Events page for event dates or see County sites listed above.
