About Waste Wise Events

The Waste Wise Events (WWE) program promotes recycling, waste reduction, and the elimination of litter at public events throughout the Midlands. Groups may borrow trash and recycling containers (with bags) and ash receptacles for cigarette butts from Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB) to use at special events.

How Do I Obtain Recycling and Trash Containers and/or Ash Receptacles?

1. Submit the request.

  • Call (803) 733-1139 or email programs@kmbsc.org to request the WasteWise Agreement Form and to provide the required information.
  • NOTE: All borrowers are required to provide a credit card number by phone, prior to the materials being prepared for pickup, to ensure the safe return of all borrowed materials. Please call (803) 733-1139 Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to provide the credit card details.

2. Make arrangements to pick up the materials from KMB’s office in West Columbia. (See address above.)

  • They will be placed behind our office with your group’s name on them.
  • Three bags are provided per container. If more are needed, please let us know.

3. Complete the Report Card provided with the supplies or via email..

  • This is our only requirement in return for use of the free containers.
  • Knowing approximately how many people attended your event and how many bags of litter, recyclables, and cigarette butts you collected allows us to continue to provide these containers at no charge.

4. Return all borrowed containers to KMB’s office within one week of your event by leaving them in our backyard (with your group’s name on them.) Groups will be charged for the cost of any containers damaged or not returned.

WasteWise Item Replacement Cost
Trash & Recycling Containers $85
Feather Flags $200
Cigarette Containers $150

KMB strongly recommends that you “twin the bins”. The twin the bin system is a process of setting up a recycling container next to a trash receptacle in order to encourage the correct use of each container.

The individual or organization borrowing the bins is responsible for transportation and disposal of recyclables and trash.
