Invest in your community.
Closely modeled after the Great American Cleanup, volunteers can now borrow cleanup material from Keep the Midlands Beautiful throughout the year in order to make an immediate, visual change in your community—at no cost to you! Keep the Midlands Beautiful will lend cleanup supplies, including gloves, vests, litter grabbers, and trash bags, to groups of two or more for a one-time cleanup on any day of the year.
We have three requirements for one-time cleanup groups:
- Groups must dispose of their full bags of trash at the end of their cleanup. KMB cannot pick up bags of trash collected by your group. For more information on where to take bags of trash, please click here for information about Richland County Solid Waste Management or click here for information about Lexington County Solid Waste Management.
- All supplies, including leftover trash bags and broken grabbers, must be returned to KMB’s office no later than one week after your cleanup is complete.
- Group leaders must submit a report card. It is a short form that only takes a few minutes to fill out, and it helps us show our sponsors and donors that our volunteers truly make an impact.
The Great American Cleanup is underway and will continue until May 31st! Please plan a Spring cleanup with your neighborhood, civic group, school group, church group, or with your family. Although the GAC ends on May 31, our cleanup efforts will not end after May 31! In fact, Keep the Midlands Beautiful is happy to provide litter pickup supplies for one-time cleanup groups during the entire year. Any cleanup initiative, large or small–from the GAC to a one-time cleanup with two good friends–is an opportunity for you to demonstrate community involvement and inspire others to organize their own cleanups.
For more information, please email us or call our office at (803) 733-1139!
For returning groups whose group representative HAS been to safety training: The next AAH pickup will be Saturday, August 24th!
If you need supplies, please email us at AAH@keepthemidlandsbeautiful.org to let us know your group name, county, how many grabbers and pairs of gloves you will need, and the day you plan to pick up your supplies for your SCDOT-scheduled Adopt-A-Highway cleanup!

SC Litter Laws
Litter — a common source of pollution — threatens the health and beauty of far too many of our treasured lakes, streams and rivers. The Adopt-A-Waterway program offers volunteer groups the opportunity to address water-based litter issues in Richland and Lexington Counties. Please join us in protecting and cleaning up our creeks, rivers, lakes, boat landings and islands.
Dedicated to improving the communities where our customers and employees live and work.
More than 50 groups have signed up for Adopt-A-Waterway so far! It’s not too late to get involved, and there are still many waterways available for adoption. Click here to get involved.

Adopt-A-Waterway Program Partners
Special thanks to Johnson’s Garbage Service for providing trash pickup for our Richland County Adopt-A-Waterway groups.
The Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program is sponsored by the SC Department of Transportation. Keep the Midlands Beautiful coordinates the AAH program for roads in Richland and Lexington Counties. Keep the Midlands Beautiful also coordinates the Adopt-A-Street program for the City of Columbia.
Through the Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt -A-Street programs, caring citizens take part in preserving and maintaining streets throughout the Midlands. A wide range of community organizations, like civic groups, businesses, schools, and churches, adopt sections of road in or near their communities and remove litter from those segments at least four times a year for two years.
The benefits are significant. First, the program serves as an educational tool against littering and establishes stewardship of public lands. Secondly, the program helps advance tourism, development and quality of life for all of our citizens by improving the appearance of our area. Finally, the program saves taxpayer dollars by performing a valuable public service on a volunteer basis.
